A Beginner’s Guide To Developing Your Skincare Routine

I’m not going to lie, I only developed a solid skincare routine a couple years ago. When I was younger, I really didn’t have anyone to tell me what products I should use or how I should take care of my skin. Everyone in my family has pretty good skin, so no one could offer personal advice whenever I’d experience breakouts (and trust me… they were really bad). I put this little guide together because this is something I wish I had when I was struggling with my skin. So I hope this genuinely helps you and maybe provides you with some information you may not have already known. I’m not a dermatologist and I’m not qualified in an way, so this guide is just full of information I have picked up over the years. Always use your own judgement and common sense.

How I Save Money On Makeup

The world would be an amazing place if we had access to all the makeup our hearts desired, without breaking the bank. While I’m sure this is a reality for some people, if you are on a tight budget like me, or you just like saving money (also like me) then you need to learn how to be smart with the way you buy makeup.

One thing I did (that some of you may remember me talking about near the end of last year) was that I went on a “No Buy” streak for about a month and a half. I didn’t buy any new makeup, unless I ran out of something and needed it. I think that this really made me aware of how much I was spending on makeup alone, which in turn has made helped increase my willpower to not buy makeup on impulse, or at least wait until I can get a good deal on something. This is what I would normally suggest to people who want to save money, but it is definitely something that is easier said than done.

Therefore, I bring to you my tips on how to save money on makeup! I separated the categories into higher end makeup stores and drugstores, because I know that some people will only shop at either or. But as always, feel free to read through it all!

MOTD: All Matte Everything

Before you read this, just know that I am aware that I need to invest in a better camera to capture my pictures. My cell phone just doesn’t cut it when I need to zoom in and showcase the colors I used. I’m sorry!!!! Okay, continue.

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve been able to play with my palettes. Maybe it’s cause I don’t normally wear eyeshadow to school, which is where I spend the majority of my time… Either way, this look is the result of boredom, and also because I wanted to practice my blending skills.

Sunday Riley #Squadgoals Skincare Essentials Kit | REVIEW

I bought myself the Sunday Riley Squad Goals kit as an early birthday present to myself near the end of December. I’ve always wanted to try out the Good Genes treatment, but I figured that by purchasing a kit with more products, it would allow my to try out more products for a better deal. The reason why I’ve waited so long to post this is because I wanted to use it for a couple of weeks to really give you guys as good of a review as I can! (Also just a heads up, this will be a long one, so get ready to read!)

Oils: A SERIOUS Gamechanger

As someone who has oily skin and hair, a year ago you would never catch me incorporating oil into my beauty routine. If I’m already oily, why would I add more oil to my body! But wow I was wrong. I want to share with you guys my experience with various oils and hopefully you’ll learn a thing or two!

MOTD: Brown and Gold halo eye

I wanted to attempt to do a halo eye, and I know this is not the greatest halo eye out there but for a first timer, I think I did a really good job! I wasn’t planning on posting this (I don’t usually like to post twice a day haha) but I ended up really loving this look and will probably wear it when I get a chance. This seriously just motivates me to do more eyeshadow looks because I genuinely had so much fun creating this look!

*Side note: I need to invest in a better camera… taking pictures without natural light on my phone makes everything look so harsh and unflattering*

I prepped my eyes with my Maybelline Fit Me concealer (I don’t have any eyeshadow primers, but I think this works pretty good, especially if you’re someone who doesn’t do eyeshadow regularly) and set it with some pressed powder. Then I used Shell from my Covergirl Trunaked Nudes palette as my transition/base shade all over my lid. It’s a light cream, almost white, so I figured the colours would show up a bit better.

The flash in this picture washed out all the colours 😦 but I figured I’d add it anyways

So for the outer and inner corners of my eyes, I used NYX Nude Matte Shadow in Dance The Tides. This wasn’t as pigmented as I had hoped for it to be, so I had to really pack on the shadow. I tried my best to keep a prominent space in the middle empty for the halo. I also made sure to blend every so often to avoid harsh lines.

For the “halo”, I used the Loreal Infallible eyeshadow in Hourglass Beige. Suuuch a pretty golden/champagney colour and looked really nice with the matte brown.

I wanted to add some dimension, so I added my NYX Matte Bronzer in Medium in the crease to kind of deepen the look. I also used this in the lower lash line. This bronzer is crazy pigmented so I think it works perfectly as an eyeshadow alternative.

That’s it for the eyes. All other details are listed below:

  • Foundation: Milani Conceal+Perfect foundation in 06 Sand Beige
  • Highlight: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop
  • Contour: NYX Matte Bronzer in Medium
  • Lashes: Ardell 120 Demi
  • Lips: Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Kae

Guys I literally came up with this look at like 10 at night and I regretted it because I wanted to wear it out but I had no where else to go. Oh well.

P.S. I guess that would make this a MOTN? Hahahahaha. I love myself.

MOTD: Keeping it simple

It’s been a while since I did one of these huh. Sorry if you’re disappointed at the simplicity and basicness of this “look” but I wanted to post this because this is pretty much what I’ve been doing since October started. I have been keeping my makeup routine pretty simple. Mainly because I’m at school most of the week, and since my school days are fairly short, I don’t see the point in putting on a full face of makeup. I’m also just lazy LOL it saves me so much time in the morning to be able to just quickly put on a few products and have time for breakfast. I have also gained an appreciation for simplicity. Don’t get me wrong, I am still all about winged eyeliner, bold lips and blinding highlight, but being very minimal with my makeup has made me appreciate the fact that you don’t need tons of makeup to still feel beautiful. (I mean I always knew that, it’s just that now I’m actually living it.) Not to mention that taking off my makeup at night takes me even less time! It’s great!

My simple routine consists of:

2016-10-11 05.50.42 1.jpgObviously. I’m pretty sure brows are the one thing that everyone does, no matter what look you’re going for.

2016-10-11 05.50.44 1.jpg

I use the Smashbox High Definition Concealer in Medium. This was gifted to me by one of my friends since it isn’t her colour and since then I have fallen in love with it. But I’m pretty sure Smashbox discontinued it because I can never find it on their website or at Sephora… or any place that sells Smashbox. So sad. But yeah I just put this under my eyes and wherever there’s excess redness or discolouration.

2016-10-11 05.50.45 1.jpg

I like to bake my face because it seriously keeps the concealer there all day. I don’t know why I haven’t tried baking my face earlier on in life, I feel like can’t leave the house without baking. It helps my concealer last all day and makes it look so flawless. It also just saves me from have to use my UD de-slick spray (because it cost ya girl $18 for a 1oz bottle and I’m not tryna use it on days where I’m not wearing foundation!!!)

2016-10-11 05.50.41 1.jpg

I don’t really like wearing mascara, but ever since I got a sample of the Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara in my VIB appreciation bag (you can read about it here if you want to see what else I got) I’ve been using it just because of the fact that it’s there.

2016-10-11 05.50.40 1.jpgColourpop’s Beeper is just my everyday go to colour. It requires minimal thought and looks effortless which is what I’m kinda going for.

And voila LOL. It looks like I kinda just got out of bed but I still look kinda put together. Woo! Remember you don’t need makeup to feel good about yourself, but at the same time, don’t let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t wear it if you want to! Live your life! Do you!

Products I Regret Buying

So far, my blog has been about products I love and products I think everyone should own. But today I’m gonna talk about products I regret buying. Spread the awareness yall! I think my main message from this post is to ALWAYS read reviews before purchasing any beauty products, and use your discretion when buying it. If I had read the reviews about these products before I bought them, then I never would have bought them in the first place because these all had pretty bad reviews. But learn from my mistakes!

*DISCLAIMER: These are products that haven’t worked for me and products I really don’t like. If these have worked for you, then awesome. Not trying to put anyone down in anyway for liking something that I don’t like haha.

Ardell Brush On Lash Adhesive

This product is the reason why I will never sacrifice quality for price EVER again. I’ve mostly used DUO or Revlon lash glue, but the day I bought this, I decided I’d rather pay $3 instead of $7. BIGGEST MISTAKE OF LIFE. First of all, this glue dries SO. FAST. So if you don’t apply the lash as soon as you apply the glue, you’re gonna find yourself having to re-apply glue. Also the glue doesn’t dry tacky, it dries crusty and hard. So it is so painful taking this off your eyelid at the end of the night, and I’ve ruined the band of a pair of lashes trying to remove the glue. Nor to mention that if you get this in your eye it BURNS. Literally burns. It feels like you have literal acid in your eye, which makes your eye tear up, and this glue isn’t waterproof, so it ruins the stickiness and you gotta go through the process of reapplying again. Ugh. I’ll keep this just in case I ever run out of glue but I will NOT be reaching for this ever.

Rimmel London Wonder’Lash Waterproof

I love anything with Argan oil in it, which is why I was compelled to buy this mascara. But then when I used it, I was extremely disappointed. By extremely disappointed I mean that this is the worst mascara I’ve ever used lol. It didn’t do anything for my lashes. It didn’t lengthen or define them. Even when I curled my lashes, it would make them droop. Real talk the only thing this did for me was maybe darken my lashes (I mean they’re already black so how much darker can they get…) and left me looking like a raccoon throughout the day. I don’t know why Rimmel hasn’t just discontinued this already…

Essence How To Make Nude Eyes makeup box

I’ve written a MOTDs that feature this eyeshadow palette, but now that I think of it, I really do regret buying this palette. The shadows are not very pigmented and of the six shades you get, all of them are shimmery and are very close in colour. This is not to get confused though because I think other people may really like this palette, especially someone just starting out, but I think I would’ve benefitted more if I used the money spent on this palette on something else.

My Favorite Night Balm

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

This is from Bath and Body Works and their Co Bigelow Apothecaries line. You are supposed to apply this before you sleep for “intense overnight moisturization”. While it did provide some moisturization, I wouldn’t say it was intense. I prefer using Vaseline on my lips before bed, and that’s what I’ll be sticking to and spending my money on from now on.

I hope this was a bit helpful for you guys. If you’re ever on the look out for new things to by, now you know a few products to avoid. Let me know if you have any products that you regret buying and I will definitely read reviews and maybe avoid them myself. Have a good night!

Revive your dried out Dipbrow!

I’m sure if you’ve ever used the ABH Dipbrow Pomade (or any cream product that comes in a little pot), you know how frustrating it is when it dries out before you’ve used it all up. Rather than throwing the product away, you can always give life back to it by doing this little hack. It’s relatively inexpensive, takes less than 5 minutes to do and should work with most potted products. Keep in mind that if the product you started out with is already EXTREMELY dry (ex. the product is shrivelled and cracked to start with) then do yourself a favour and just ignore this hack and buy a new product as this will not help you.

All you need is the dried out product (obvs), contact solution or eye drops and something to mix with. I just used a qtip and pulled off the cotton from one side. I wear contact lenses so I always have a huge bottle of contact solution handy, but if you don’t you can always buy a travel sized contact solution, or those really small bottles of eyedrops that cost ~$2-$3.

Basically all you’re going to do is add 1 – 2 drops of the solution into the product and incorporate it into the product. It’s very important to remember that you can always add solution, but you can’t remove it once it’s mixed in. Start with 1 – 2 drops, no matter how dry your product may be, and only add more if you feel like you need it after you’ve mixed it all together. If I need to add more, which I did in this case, I added in increments of 1 drop. If you add too much, you’re going to end up with a really greasy and liquidy mess. Speaking from experience here. Use your judgement to when you think you can stop adding drops.

As you can see, after you’ve finished mixing, the product looks unappealing and unusable. With clean fingers and the end of the qtip that still has cotton on it, flatten the product to your liking. The qtip will help absorb any excess solution that makes it’s way to the top of the product. Also make sure to seal the edges and any cracks that appear after you’ve flattened the product. This will prevent any air getting in and drying the product out faster.

Flattened and ready to use!

Hope this helps anyone out! I’ve heard that storing the product upside down prevents it from drying out so fast. This could be a myth, but I do it anyways so I figured I’d still pass on the knowledge haha.

Garnier Nourishing Cleansing Oil Review

If you’re like me, you want to remove your makeup as quickly and effectively as possible. Like I love putting on makeup, but at the end of a long day, I sometimes just feel so unmotivated to sit there and spend 5 minutes taking it off. Lately I have been using the Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water to remove all of my makeup, but like I said, it takes quite a bit of time and 2 cotton pads later to get most of my makeup off (still a really good product regardless!!) Then I happened to stumble upon this little guy and taking off my makeup got so much easier AND better for my skin!

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

  • $5.99 at Winners (the Canadian version of Ross or Marshalls)
  • Formulated for dry skin
  • Contains Jojoba and Macadamia Oils to help replenish the skin’s moisture balance

  • Dissolves impurities and makeup
  • Replenishes skin
  • In 1 use: Skin feels deeply leaned, hydrates and skin feels velvety soft
  • After 1 week: 100% of women felt skin was smoother and softer

I have been wanting to write this review ever since I initially used this product, but I decided to wait a week because of the one week claim.

This is my first time ever using an oil to remove my makeup, so I wanted to make sure I followed the instructions exactly. You’re supposed to apply 1 – 2 pumps into your dry hands, massage it onto a dry face, then wet your face to emulsify and remove the oil. I noticed that it seemed to get to work immediately. It took maybe 20 seconds to completely take off my waterproof eye makeup, which is the one thing I always dreaded doing when I was using micellar water and cotton pads because of how time consuming it was for me. I also got a little bit of this in my eye on a couple of occasions, but it didn’t sting my eye or anything. Which is always a good thing, I think LOL. It also dissolves liquid lipstick really well with no challenge!

This rinsed off no problem, and although I always cleanse my face after taking off my makeup, I did notice that my skin did feel really smooth. If you were to use this as a makeup remover and face cleanser, you might feel as if there’s a small film on your skin (nothing gross or greasy feeling, it feels more like a film of moisture or a barrier on your skin), but I think this is because this product was made for dry skin, so it packs more moisture than normal. Of course I have no way of proving this, it’s just a theory I have. And yes, I can honestly say that after a week of using this, I have noticed that my skin does feel softer. Like I can’t stop touching my face right after I use this. I walk around my house like  img_0584, then I immediately have to stop because I shouldn’t be touching my face after I just washed it. And the moisture lasts throughout the night and into the next day. When I wake up, my skin feels just like it did when I went to be the night before.

The only thing I don’t like about this is not about the actual product itself, it’s about the packaging. The first time I used this, I laid it on it’s side in my skincare drawer and the next day when I went to use it again, there was a bit of leakage in my drawer. So I stored it right side up after I used it that night, but in the morning when I had to move it, there was a bit of oil on the sides and bottom of the bottle. So keep in mind that this leaks from the pump. Even when you go to pump product in your hand, oil will squirt out of the sides of the pump, so that’s something that needs to be fixed. I now store it standing up with a paper towel underneath it.

All in all, using this oil cut down my makeup removal time significantly but it removed all my makeup so effectively! And what I really love about this is that my skin never feels stripped of anything. I know that I will never go back to using makeup remover wipes, unless I absolutely need to use one, because I feel like after using a wipe, my skin can feel a bit stripped and makeup is not always removed effectively the first time.

  • Dissolves all traces of makeup without leaving any residue behind
  • Leaves skin feeling smooth and soft
  • Extremely gentle on skin
  • True to all claims
  • So inexpensive!! Only $6!

  • Leaks from the pump
  • Some people may find the scent a bit strong (however I personally don’t mind it)
  • Hard to find – I’ve never seen it in any drugstores, so if I hadn’t gone into Winners, I may have never known about this product

If you guys have any other cleansing oils you love, leave me some recommendations. I would love to try out new oils, after being converted to them because of this product. And thanks for reading this! I know sometimes my posts are really long, and I don’t have many followers, but I do like putting a lot of detail into reviews like these to help anyone make an informed decision! Haha okay bye have a good day!

The Beauty Tag

I saw this tag on beautifybrooke‘s blog and I love little questionnaires like these so I decided to do it myself!

How many times do you wash your face daily?

I wash my face twice daily! In the morning when I wake up and at night in the shower.

What skin type do you have?

Honestly I don’t know. That sounds stupid, but my skin type has been fluctuating a lot recently. It’s usually oily and acne prone but there was a period where it randomly got reeeaally dry for a couple months, then it went to normal and now I’m back to oily, but not as oily and acne prone as I once was. So long story short… combination? LOL

What is your current facial wash?

I use Cetaphil in the morning everyday, and at night, it really kind of depends on my mood/the state of my skin. Most of the time I use my Fresh Soy Face Cleanser, but if I have a couple pimples or want to feel extremely clean, I’ll use the Biore Ice Cleanser. My sister recently bought the charcoal phyto powder cleansing foam from The Faceshop and I’ve been enjoying that as well.

Do you exfoliate? If so, what brand do you use?

Exfoliating isn’t part of my skin care routine tbh, but since I use my Clarisonic everyday, it’s kind of like a really gentle exfoliation everyday haha.

What moisturizer do you use?

For my face, I use Aveeno daily moisturizing lotion and for my body I use the Vaseline Total Moisture lotion in the cocoa butter flavor. Scent? You get the idea.

Do you use eye cream?

No omg and I know that I should have started using it like 2 years ago, but I really haven’t looked into anything.

Do you or did you have acne prone skin?

My skin is no longer acne prone. Woo!!! I still get pimples here and there, but I know when and where I’ll get them because I get hormonal acne.

What foundation do you use?

I use the Maybelline Fit Me Matte+Poreless

How about concealer?

I don’t really use concealer, or I don’t use it very often. But the one that I have is the Loreal True Match concealer.

Do you know your undertone color?

I didn’t when I came across this question so I just googled it, and discovered that my undertones are warm? Is that accurate?

What do you think of false lashes?

I think false lashes are great haha I like how they have the power to completely change the look. And I love how there are seriously so many different kinds of lashes. If they didn’t irritate my eyes so much, I would wear them everyday.

What brand of mascara do you use?

I don’t have one particular brand that I am committed to, but currently I’m using the Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara.

Sephora or MAC?

SEPHORA!! Not that I’ve ever shopped at / own anything from MAC, but it just makes sense to me to shop at Sephora because you have so many options in terms of brands and products.

What makeup tools do you use in makeup application?

Makeup brushes and the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. Woo.

Do you use an eye primer?

Nope, I just use my concealer lol

For the face?

Yes, I use the Laniege Lumi Block Primer or Baby Skin, depending on my mood haha

Do you use pencil or liquid eyeliner?

Liquid! I can’t use pencil eyeliner because I just find that I don’t get the accuracy or intensity that I want with a pencil and also I find liquid eyeliner easier to control.

What is your favorite blush?

I don’t use blush!

Do you use lipgloss?

No bye I hate sticky lips. I recently watched a soothingsista video and she used lip gloss and I really liked the way it looked, so maybe I’ll try lip gloss out.

Do you like drugstore makeup?

Yes I do! I think there are a looot of good products you can get at drugstores that do the same thing as some high end makeup products, but then again it’s all about preference.

Name a makeup crime you hate:

Ummmmmm… I guess when people don’t know how to correctly apply false lashes, and instead of just taking them off or fixing them, they just walk around with crooked and janky eyelashes.

Do you prefer colorful shades of makeup or neutral ones?

Personally on me, I prefer neutral shades, but I always admire how pretty the really colorful shades of makeup are. LOL I look at bold palettes and think to myself “One day…”

If you had to leave the house with just one makeup product on, what would it be?

I mean I’ve left my house with zero makeup products on, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be eyebrows.

What do you think of makeup?

I love makeup! I love how it has the power to transform someone’s confidence and I love how it’s a way for someone to express their creativity! Makeup is also seriously a bonding tool. Like as soon as someone starts talking to me about makeup products or something, I feel like I can talk for ages with them. I also love how makeup trends and looks are always changing. Nothing is ever the same and it’s amazing just seeing all the looks that people can create. Idk, I definitely know I’m not the best at makeup but I love how there is always something to learn and how you can only get better at how you apply it. Haha I can talk for hours.

Anyways, thanks for reading this if you did! I would love to read your beuty tags if you decide to do them. So if you do one, comment below and let me know so I can check it out. Hope yall have a great weekend!
