October Favorites

October was a crazy month. It began really slow and then next thing I knew it was already over. It’s probably because my school schedule has been so crazy, that I barely notice time go by. Besides that though, October was great. I celebrated Thanksgiving with my family, got to see my all time favourite band The 1975 for the second time (and currently still feeling the post concert depression HARD) and my cousin turned 18 and had a debut (a big coming of age birthday party for filipinas when they turn 18 haha) and it was sooo much fun. Anyways, here are my favourites for this month.

KathleenLights

This is kinda random because pretty much everyone and their mama knows who KathleenLights is or has at least heard of her. I’ve always heard of her but I’ve never actually watched any of her videos. When I was looking for inspiration for eye makeup, her tutorial using only elf products popped up, and after I watched that one, I binge watched all her videos (not all, but a lot). I love her personality in her videos and how genuine she seems and I think she’s one of my favourite Youtubers now.

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip – Mess Around

2016-10-30 02.22.44 1.jpg

Ever since I got this colour, Beeper has taken a backseat as my everyday lip colour. Mess Around is one of those “your lips but better” shade, for me at least. I like it because it’s very natural looking on me and I personally think the colour looks very nice on me. The main reason why I like it is because the formula of this is amazing. I think it’s safe to say that the Ultra Satin Lips are my new Colourpop fave. They are very long lasting for something that doesn’t dry matte and it is soooo so so comfortable on my lips. I never feel like they are cracking or have the life sucked out of them. I’m pretty sad that this was the only Ultra Satin Lip that I purchased from my Colourpop order. I want more!!!!!

Tweezerman Smooth Finish Facial Hair Remover

2016-10-30 02.22.41 1.jpg

You should know that I do not trust those at home moustache remover lotions like Nair. I have this fear that I’m going to get a really bad chemical burn and my upper lip is going to stay red for like a week. I am also pretty cheap LOL I don’t want to pay someone to wax my moustache off if I can do it for free. My cousin actually got this first and raved about it so I wanted one of my own, so I don’t have to be ghetto and pluck my moustache off. It takes some getting used to, but it is really good at getting every hair and takes less time. PLUS this came with little tweezers which I was also really exited about because I have wanted Tweezerman tweezers for the longest time!

Urban Decay de-slick Setting Spray

2016-10-30 02.22.42 1.jpg

I hate that I love this so much because I’m gonna have to go back to Sephora and spend $38 on the full sized bottle. MY POOR WALLET. It’s okay though because this is God’s gift to my skin. I noticed a dramatic difference in how oily my skin is at the end of the day when I use this. My skin had almost no trace of excess shine, which is something that usually never happens when I only set my makeup with powder.

elf Contouring Brush

2016-10-30 02.22.45 1.jpg

This may be the most dense brush I have ever came across in my life thus far. If you really like an intense contoured look, this brush will help you achieve it no problem. Like I said, it is EXTREMELY dense so it’ll pack on the product  easily and the shape of the brush fits perfectly into the hollows of your cheeks.  I guess the only downside to this is that the density of the brush and the short bristles make it kinda hard to blend product. I don’t mind it though because I will just go in with my NARS Ita brush and blend everything out. It is also really good for nose contouring. Not to mention this brush is $7! For the quality and user friendliness (is that a term you can use for makeup brushes?) of this brush, I think that it’s a steal!

Milani Conceal & Perfect Foundation – 06 Sand Beige

2016-10-30 02.22.27 1.jpg

I won’t say much about this foundation because I’ll be posting  a full review on it soon. But I’m sure you’ve all heard about this and I just want to let yall know that there is a reason why everyone love this foundation. It’s definitely become one of my favourite foundations!

As usual, let me know of any favourites you’ve had this month, I would love to check them out. Take care!

The 1975 Concert

The 1975 is my favourite band and I was lucky enough to watch them live (for the second time!!!) on Sunday. They released a new album (well it’s not really new at this point) and I was really happy that they went on tour and came to my city to perform those songs. This one was a bit different from the last time they came here because the venue was muuuch larger and there were so many more people.

20161023_211233_hdr20161023_211706_hdr20161023_212813_hdr20161023_21375920161023_214158_hdr20161023_214743_hdr20161023_215253_hdr20161023_215532_hdr20161023_222312_hdr20161023_223136_hdr

I was a hardcore fangirl at one point, obsessed with being at the front of the crowd and meeting the band and taking videos of the entire concert, but I think I’ve outgrown that. To be honest, it was really nice just singing along and actually experiencing the concert with my friends instead of worrying about all those things I mentioned. I also only took videos of snippets of my favourite songs instead of watching the whole concert through my phone (I also never watch the videos I take anyways, so it would be a waste). We got a nice spot near the back where we could still get a good view of everything because we didn’t want to get bodied in the middle of the crowd LOL. Also when you’re in the crowd, it’s definitely hard to see over the heads and masses, especially if you’re kinda short like me.

What I really enjoyed about the concert (besides the actual concert itself) was their use of lights and graphics. There was a different background for each song and the background fit the feeling of the song perfectly. It was sooo aesthetically pleasing. I tried to get a picture of all the backgrounds but I was just caught up in the moment so I only got a picture of some of them. I also just really love concerts. I love everything about them. I literally forgot about everything that was stressing me out and I had so much fun. Wah. I’m gonna feel post concert depression hard for this one. If you haven’t listened to The 1975, then I definitely recommend you to take a listen. Their music is very like… poppy/synth? Idk I can’t describe genres very well… Clearly… But they’re really good! They have a lot of fast paced upbeat cool songs and more solemn, kinda sad, songs that make me feel all types of ways. Their music may not be for everyone but I feel like you will like at least one song. Maybe that’s just me being biased though.

Anyways, I hope everyone had a great weekend! And if you didn’t, just remember there’s always tomorrow hehe.

A Nice Little Pick-Me-Up

I am a pretty sentimental person. I have this huuge box filled with random things that hold precious memories to me.  Whenever I’m sad, I pull this box out. I have TONS of letters and cards (that would not fit the pic obviously) that people have written to me over the years and it always makes me feel better to read through all of them. I guess when you feel like the world is against you and like you have no one in your corner, reading the kind words that people you love have taken the time to write to you, reminds you that you are not and will never be alone. Letters and cards are also special because they are one of a kind. The message you receive is always personal and meaningful and it’s just nice to know that someone took time out of their day to sit down and write down heartfelt messages. It’s just a nice feeling knowing that you matter to someone. All your negative thoughts get put on hold for a while.

2016-10-18 03.21.27 1.jpg

Whoever you are, I hope you remember that when you feel down, you are not alone. You have an army of people who want to be there for you and support you and help you get through this tough time. It is completely okay to be sad and upset, but don’t hold it all in. Talk to someone. Spend time with people who truly love and care for you. I also want to remind you to not underestimate the power of being there for yourself. Learning to love and to be there for yourself is one of the greatest strengths you can develop as a person, and it is something that no one can take away from you. If someone has hurt you, remember that their actions do not determine your worth. Do not close your heart off from getting close to others because of one bad experience with someone you trusted. Life goes on and you will be fine and there is nothing wrong with you.

And even if you aren’t going through a tough time, be there for someone who is. Offer kind words or compliments to anyone you come across, because you never really know what someone else is going through. Don’t hold back in letting others know how much they mean to you or how much you care about them. There are already so much negative things going on in this world, it doesn’t hurt to spread love and positivity whenever you can.

MOTD: Brown and Gold halo eye

I wanted to attempt to do a halo eye, and I know this is not the greatest halo eye out there but for a first timer, I think I did a really good job! I wasn’t planning on posting this (I don’t usually like to post twice a day haha) but I ended up really loving this look and will probably wear it when I get a chance. This seriously just motivates me to do more eyeshadow looks because I genuinely had so much fun creating this look!

*Side note: I need to invest in a better camera… taking pictures without natural light on my phone makes everything look so harsh and unflattering*

20161018_231445

20161018_231755-120161018_231748-120161018_231742-120161018_231854-1

I prepped my eyes with my Maybelline Fit Me concealer (I don’t have any eyeshadow primers, but I think this works pretty good, especially if you’re someone who doesn’t do eyeshadow regularly) and set it with some pressed powder. Then I used Shell from my Covergirl Trunaked Nudes palette as my transition/base shade all over my lid. It’s a light cream, almost white, so I figured the colours would show up a bit better.

20161018973728428.jpg
The flash in this picture washed out all the colours 😦 but I figured I’d add it anyways

So for the outer and inner corners of my eyes, I used NYX Nude Matte Shadow in Dance The Tides. This wasn’t as pigmented as I had hoped for it to be, so I had to really pack on the shadow. I tried my best to keep a prominent space in the middle empty for the halo. I also made sure to blend every so often to avoid harsh lines.

For the “halo”, I used the Loreal Infallible eyeshadow in Hourglass Beige. Suuuch a pretty golden/champagney colour and looked really nice with the matte brown.

I wanted to add some dimension, so I added my NYX Matte Bronzer in Medium in the crease to kind of deepen the look. I also used this in the lower lash line. This bronzer is crazy pigmented so I think it works perfectly as an eyeshadow alternative.

20161018_235256.jpg

That’s it for the eyes. All other details are listed below:

  • Foundation: Milani Conceal+Perfect foundation in 06 Sand Beige
  • Highlight: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop
  • Contour: NYX Matte Bronzer in Medium
  • Lashes: Ardell 120 Demi
  • Lips: Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Kae

Guys I literally came up with this look at like 10 at night and I regretted it because I wanted to wear it out but I had no where else to go. Oh well.

P.S. I guess that would make this a MOTN? Hahahahaha. I love myself.

5 Tips For Studying Smarter (not harder)

I just finished my first round of midterms. I had them all in the same week, literally one midterm everyday, and my brain is exhausted. However all my studying paid off because I got my marks back and I did significantly well on all of them. Okay, what’s the point in being humble, I worked hard and I did frikkin amazing on all of them. This isn’t a post on the best way to study, it’s just things I do to alleviate the stress of studying (but if you do want a post on how I study, then let me know and I’ll make it happen) Ok. Let’s go.

1. Take good notes!

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

I think good notes are the key to passing any test. I’m not going to tell you how you should take notes, because not everyone takes notes the same way. So write your notes in a way that will really help you. I bring my laptop to every class and write notes in MS Word because I can type faster than I write and I can type without looking at the keys. So if I need to copy something down from a slide, I can easily type it while still paying attention to my professor. I also try to summarize, shorten and write things in my own words/in ways that I can better understand because it helps me remember the points better. I also ALWAYS rewrite my notes when I get home because rewriting is another way of helping me remember what I just learned and I just study better off physical.. things? (Like paper and hand written notes and hardcopy textbooks rather than ebooks). I also have a system when it comes to colours and underlining and all that jazz, but that would take too long to explain LOL. I’m really OCD about my notes…

2. Get a study buddy

1429754876525

My study buddy Sandra and I taking advantage of the library’s prime selfie lighting LOL. Also the day we decided to go to Mexico.

Studying can be a daunting task. Personally for me, the task feels less intimidating when I have someone to study with. I also feel more productive. It’s optimal to study with someone who is in the same class because that way if you don’t remember something, or you don’t quite get a concept, you can ask the other person for help and vice versa. But if you don’t have a friend in the class (which is a situation I find myself in more often than not) you obviously have the option of studying with other people. I usually study with friends or with my siblings. I find being in the presence of other people who are productive keeps me on track and we work off of each other’s energy. You can ask the other person to test you on topics, you have a person to take quick study breaks with and you also have someone who will remind you to stay on track when you doze off. (Funny story, but one time when my friends and I were studying for finals, we were thinking of places we would rather be and someone said Mexico and we were all like “Let’s go to Mexico!” and from that conversation, we have been talking about it non stop and now we’re going to Mexico next summer. But maybe this is getting too ahead of myself, make sure you pass all your classes first LOL)

3. Study somewhere good (?)

Shoutouts to Ahn

I cannot study at home. Well I can, but not effectively. There are so many distractions and noises going on that it’s kind of hard to study. I prefer to study at the library near my house. It has a nice amount of windows (I like studying with as much natural lighting as I can), it’s very quiet (obviously) and there is less to be distracted by. Everyone minds their own business, so I’m not constantly looking up from my notes or my laptop.

4. Remember to take breaks

10 – 15 mins are what I take. I’ll eat a snack, watch a couple YouTube videos, look at my phone. But once that break is over, it’s study time! Close your social media tabs, put your phone on silent and get back to work!!

5. White noise!!!

White noise is something I discovered last year. When I listen to white noise, I feel like I am 50x more focused because it helps block out any outside noise. The one I listen to is a ten hour video on Youtube, which is pretty convenient because I don’t have to worry about having to replay the video after an hour (which is the length of alot of of white noise videos on Youtube) White noise kind of sounds like what it’s like to be on an airplane. Which motivates me because it’s like after this year imma be on a plane to Mexico. Hahahhaha I’m so extra bye.

I hope this helped yall out a bit! I am completely done my first round of midterms, but all my friends are just starting, so on the days where I don’t have any homework and want to hang out with someone, I HAVE NO ONE TO HANG OUT WITH! Oh well. First world problems haha. If you have midterms, then best of luck! Kill it! You got this.

Little Reminders

A couple days ago, I read about how James Charles, a 17 year old guy, became the first male ambassador for Covergirl. He has a pretty big following, but I’ve never actually heard of him until I stumbled upon the post on my Instagram explore feed. I was creeping some of his pictures and I saw one that was kind of like a before and after picture… The “before” picture was the very first time he ever put on makeup and the “after” picture was him now, exactly one year after he first put makeup on his face. And holy. The transformation was crazy. His skills had improved so much over the course of just one year. And in that one year, he’s gained so much recognition and of course, he became the first “CoverBoy”, which in itself is a huge accomplishment already.

@jcharlesbeauty

I guess this just made me think about myself and where I am in life. I don’t aspire to be on his level of fame but I think it’s really inspiring to see just how much someone can improve in such a short amount of time, with the right amounts of dedication and passion. I genuinely love makeup and enjoy talking about it with others and spending an eternity in makeup aisles in drugstores or Sephora. But I realize that even though I am passionate about makeup, I keep myself pretty stagnant, and don’t allow myself to grow and expand my skills. I lack the dedication aspect. For example, I talk about wanting to learn how to apply eyeshadow properly but I don’t take the time to sit down and learn techniques, or learn what colours will look good blended together. Another thing is that I rarely step out of my comfort zone. I do my makeup the same pretty much everyday, with the only source of variety being the colour of my lips. And you can’t really improve yourself if you’re stuck doing the same thing over and over again.

I don’t just want to improve my makeup skills, but I also want to be able to improve myself  as a person. This sounds stupid, but I’ve never really had a hobby or activity that I like to do and that I excel at, so I dedicate myself to being the best person I can be, not only for myself, but for those who are closest to me. I stay passionate about bettering myself because I know that improving myself will in turn help me help others. I want to be able to inspire others, even if it’s just something as simple as being confident or pursuing this blog that I know a few of my friends are always updated with (You know who you are, thanks for making me feel like I’m an interesting person hehe shoutouts)

As cliche as it sounds, nothing is impossible. I believe that you can do anything you want and be anything you want, as long as you put your mind to it and TRULY believe that you can do it. Stay passionate, dedicated, curious and open minded. And I want to thank James Charles (even though he’ll never read this) for igniting a random spark of inspiration in me. Something as simple as an Instagram caption has helped to put things into perspective a tiny bit more. I think your story is amazing and beautiful and I am glad you got this opportunity!!

Colourpop Haul

As many of you already know, I live in Canada, so Colourpop is a little pricey because of the conversion rate and shipping. Luckily Colourpop was having a promotion where if you spend $50 or more, you get free international shipping. I got some of my cousins to order with me so that spending $50 would be easier to achieve and I finally got my products after what felt like years! (Jk, shipping isn’t to blame. I’m just an incredibly impatient person.)

Such a pretty box ugh

R-L: Rooch, Mess Around, Beeper, Kae & Dukes

swatches.jpg
Top to bottom: Rooch, Mess Around, Beeper, Kae & Dukes

I didn’t have natural light so the swatches are under a white light and then under regular light LOL

Beeper – “mid-tone taupe”

20161012_210702

This is my go-to everyday lipstick. I just love this colour because I think it’s very flattering on me. Coincidentally at the time I was ordering, I was running out of this, so I just restocked. But here’s a picture of my face just in case you forget what it looks like.

Mess Around – “mid-tone grey beige”

20161012_214222

Mess Around is the only satin finish lipstick I got and it’s the first one I’ve ever tried. I really wish I got more of them though, because for a non-matte liquid lipstick, it lasts SO. LONG. And it is just so comfortable to wear. It isn’t sticky when applying and when it dries, it doesn’t feel like you have any product on your lips.I think this would be the perfect muted colour for whenever I feel brave enough to do a bold eye look. Whenever that is….

Kae – “deep warm yellow brown”

20161012_211241

Kae is one of the colours from Karrueche collab. It really reminds me of Limbo (featured in this MOTD), but Kae is more reddish brown, where Limbo is a true deep brown. Either way, I love this colour! And I love that the packaging on the bottle is rose gold as opposed to all silver.

Rooch – “deepened russet wine”

20161012_212109

Look at how lifeless my eyes look. At this point, my lips are B E G G I N G for mercy. I now understand the pain that beauty gurus face when they swatch an entire collection of lipstick on their lips…

Rooch another colour from the Karrueche collab and I have wanted it since it got released pretty much. I think Rooch is a colour that would look flattering on anyone, regardless of skin tone. It is suuuuch a pretty deep red, like I am in love with how rich the colour is. I feel like this is the only colour I’ll be rocking around christmas time because it kinda reminds me of that time of the year. I think this colour is my favourite of all the ones I ordered.

Dukes – “dark blackberry in a matte finish”

20161012_213457

I am pretty excited about this one because it’s dark and vampy so it’s perfect for the fall and winter season and this time I can genuinely say that I don’t own a colour like this. I truly believe that dark lips look great on any skin tone, even though dark colours may be a bit intimidating to some people. I struggled a bit putting this on, so I definitely recommend using a liner with this and applying with a lip brush or cleaning up the edges with concealer. Since this is a dark colour, it can be pretty unforgiving and any mistakes you make will definitely be visible. Besides that though, this formula is so comfortable and hydrating!

That concludes my Colourpop haul yall. I promised myself that after this order, I wouldn’t spend any more money on makeup that I don’t absolutely need until 2017. So with that being said, I think this will be my last haul for a little while. I’m sad just thinking about it, but I guess I’m still benefitting since I’ll be saving money… Have a good night! (Or day, depending on where in the world you’re reading this from)
